Amsterdam Celebrates Mardi Gras!

The Amsterdam Waterfront Foundation proudly hosted a Mardi Gras Dance Party fundraiser at the Creative Connections Arts Center last night. With a crowd of dedicated Riverlink Park Concert fans in attendance, the turnout was fantastic. This was the major fundraiser for the Waterfront Foundation who bring free concerts to Amsterdam every Saturday during the months of July and August. Jeffrey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys brought the house down with Zydeco music that kept the dance floor full the entire night. Café Nola’s Creole creations even got the OK from the native Louisianans in the band.

The Art Center was transformed to a Mardi Gras inspired showcase. Special thanks go to Emily Gavry who painted the huge Bourbon Street mural that made the room come alive and to Marie Gavry who created the bead and mask centerpieces that graced each table and inflated balloons Saturday morning. Thanks to Evan Gavry who set up the audio equipment, partly owned by Evan with some rentals, and provided audio mixing the entire night. Thanks also to the City of Amsterdam for providing use of the Creative Connections Arts Center.

The Amsterdam Waterfront Foundation Board members responsible for organizing, promoting and running this fundraiser are Paul Gavry, Denise and Robert Terry, Jerry Skrocki and Dave Blaze.

Joey Thomas Big Band

It was a steamy Saturday night at Amsterdam’s Riverlink Park but over 300 showed up to hear Joey Thomas Big Band. There was even a group of swing dancers from a Ballston Spa dance class to entertain the crowd. Amsterdam Waterfront Foundation Chairman Paul Gavry thanked the sponsors of the event along with a Beechnut Corporate Executive. A video sample of the music and dancing can be found at the end of the photos.

One Sweet World

The Riverlink Concert Series is winding down but you couldn’t tell by the crowd gathered to hear One Sweet World – a tribute to Dave Matthews.

Featuring Amsterdam native Dave Swart (guitar and vocals), Joe Davoli (fiddle), Jason Rafalak (bass), Brad Batz (horns and flute), Chris Cornish (drums).

The concert started at 7pm and you can tell it’s the end of summer because the light just doesn’t last, making photography even more challenging. The people in attendance varied greatly in age accounting for the larger crowd. There was also a larger number of boats docked at the park and even an amphibious car making its way down the Mohawk River.

Photographing the Riverlink Park Concert Series was a great experience both professionally and personally as it presented the opportunity to contribute to the local community and meet some really wonderful people.  Former Amsterdam Mayor John Duchessi (D) recognized me from my blog photo, introducing himself as he shook my hand while complimenting my work on this blog.  Mr. Duchessi stated he was a regular follower of the Grove Street Grumble. It was under Mayor John Duchessi’s administration that Amsterdam’s Comprehensive Plan was created.

It was a very enjoyable evening.

Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys

Another great free concert at Amsterdam’s Riverfront Park, Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys did not disappoint. Their vocal and instrumental harmonies delivered a soulful Bluegrass sound. Competing at times will passing trains, they did not miss a beat.

Tonight’s concert was also the first presented under the new tarp donated by Beechnut Corporation. I thought it would be a hinderance to viewing the band or taking photos but it was not. I think it actually enhanced the sound.

The Riverlink  Park Concert Series is organized and funded by the Amsterdam Waterfront Foundation. Paul Gavry, President of the Foundation, presented tonight’s entertainers. (Paul is center stage with the sunglasses)

There’s more than drums along the Mohawk!

Why would anyone miss Saturday evenings down by the river in Amsterdam? With boats docked at the marina, Riverlink Café serving food and drink, cool breezes and good entertainment are just a short distance away. Bring your lawn chairs or just dance the night away.

Next Saturday is the 3rd annual Riverlink Jamboree starting at 3pm. Your MC is Peggy Pearl featuring Three Day Threshold, The Nellies and Moonshine Holler.
