Has Spring Fling lost its bling?

Amsterdam, New York’s 3rd Annual Spring Fling street festival was held on Saturday, May 18, 2013, from 10am to 4pm. Although opinions in the local newspaper praised the event as highly successful, it seemed rather lackluster and well… boring. I don’t know if it was me coming down from the celebration of Buddha’s birthday, beautifully orchestrated by the World Peace and Health Organization, or if there was just a general feeling of apathy at Spring Fling. There didn’t seem to be as many people or vendors as last year’s event. The motorcycles were not there this year and it seemed as though vendors were packing up and leaving early. It certainly didn’t help that Main Street was torn up due to the downtown rerouting and resurfacing project. One vendor I spoke with stated that people were not buying like they were last year.

For a fair comparison, I took photos about 2pm for the past two years and photographed from the same place. The photos do not lie.

I thought the Police K9 was going for Sno Kone Joe!

Buddha’s Birthday 2013

East Asian cultures celebrate the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, on the 8th day of the 4th month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The birth of the Supreme Buddha is thought to be 563 BCE and marks the beginning of Buddhist tradition.

In Amsterdam, New York, the World Peace and Health Organization celebrated Buddha’s Birthday on May 17, 2013, at the Goddess of Mercy Temple, The Five Buddha Temple and the Supreme Western Shrine Temple. This blogger was graciously given the opportunity to photograph the lavish and detailed ceremony and performances from the vantage point of the balcony at the Goddess of Mercy Temple. The photos, equally lavish and detailed, may take a while to load, though they are well worth the wait. The ceremony began with a procession of Buddhist Monks singing and chanting as they encircled the interior of the temple. This was followed by greetings to and a message of religious harmony and peace given by Holy Buddhist Master Ziguang Shang Shi. There was also song, dance, Tai Chi, opera, Chinese lions, an American Marine/Buddhist monk singing in Chinese and two Mormon missionaries singing Mormon hymns. After the conclusion of the Goddess of Mercy ceremony, the celebrants were invited to the Five Buddha Temple where they participated in the symbolic bathing of the Buddha.

Springtime in Cooperstown

The weather provided perfect lighting for photography last weekend in Cooperstown, New York. Beautiful landscapes, flowers and Otsego Lake provide great subjects. This time of year the popular summer tourist attraction is relatively devoid of crowds. With just the small Canon EOS-M (mirror less) camera, I was able to enjoy the day without lugging around the usual 30 pounds of camera gear and still get some great shots.
